Supplications of the Early Scholars upon the Completion of the Qur’an
The following passage is an excerpt from Imam Ibn al-Jazari’s book, at-Tamheed fi ‘ilm at-Tajweed. Imam Ibn al-Jazari concludes his book by mentioning some supplications that the early scholars would invoke upon completing the recitation of the Holy Qur’an.
…
I would like to conclude this book with some supplications that the later scholars have transmitted from their predecessors for the completion of the Qur’an, because the blessings of Du’aa (supplication) are great and its benefits are universal accompanied with the descent of mercy at the time of the completion of the Noble Qur’an. Allah the Exalted has said: “And when my slaves ask you (O Prophet ﷺ) regarding Me, then verily I am near; I answer the supplication of the caller when he calls upon Me” [Baqarah 186]. It is narrated from Ibn ‘Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both): “The most superior form of worship is Du’aa (supplication).”
Our teacher Shams ud-Deen Abu ‘Abdullah as-Safawi informed us that Shaykh Shihab ud-Deen Abul ‘Abbas Ahmad ibn Marwan al-Ba’labakki informed us that Imam as-Sakhawi informed us, “Our teacher Abul Qasim (i.e. Imam ash-Shatibi) used to supplicate upon the completion of the Qur’an with this Du’aa:
“O Allah, we are your slaves, the sons of your male and female slaves. Our forelocks (destinies) are in Your Hand. Your command over us is forever. Your decree over us is Just. We ask You, O Allah, by every name belonging to You, with which You have named Yourself, or which You have taught to any of Your creation, or which You have revealed in any of Your books, or which You alone have preserved in the knowledge of the unseen with You, [we ask] that You make the Qur’an the reviving springtime of our hearts, the cure of our breasts, the removal of our grievances and anxieties, and the driving force and guiding leader to You and to Your Blessed Paradise, with those upon whom You have conferred your favor among the Prophets, the Sincere, the Martyrs, and the Righteous, through Your Mercy, O Most Merciful of those who show mercy.”
And this (the above supplication) is narrated from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for alleviation from distress.
Imam as-Sakhawi said, “And I add to this (i.e. to Imam ash-Shatibi’s supplication):
O Allah! Make [the Qur’an] for us a cure, a means of guidance, a leader, and a source of mercy. And grant us the ability to recite it in a manner which pleases You. And do not let us fall into sin except that You forgive it, nor into grief except that You relieve it, nor into debt except that You repay it, nor into sickness except that You cure it, nor into an enemy except that You suffice against it, nor into loss except that You return it, nor into disobedience except that You prevent it, nor into corruption except that You rectify it, nor into death except that You bestow it with mercy, nor into fault except that You conceal it, nor into difficulty except that You ease it, nor into a need from the needs of this world and the Hereafter in which lie Your Pleasure and our salvation except that You aid us in its decree with ease from You and ‘aafiyah (well-being), through Your Mercy, O Most Merciful of those who show mercy.”
And I (Imam Ibn al-Jazari) say, “And I add to this (i.e. to the supplications of Imam ash-Shatibi and Imam as-Sakhawi):
O Allah, help the (righteous) Muslim armies with powerful aid; and grant for them a clear victory. O Allah, benefit us from that which You have taught us, and teach us that which will benefit us. O Allah, allow us to commence with good; and allow us to conclude with good; and let the outcomes of our affairs reach good. O Allah, we seek your protection from evil commencements and conclusions, and evil beginnings and ends, and internal evils and external. O Allah, do not put between us and You anyone [to be responsible] for our sustenance besides You; and make us the most content of Your creation with You; and the most needy of Your servants for You; and grant us wealth which will not mislead us; and health which will not distract us; and free us from needing those whom You have freed from needing us; and allow our last words to bear witness that there is no one worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is His messenger, may the blessings of Allah and His salutations be upon him; and grant us death while you are pleased with us without any anger; and make us at the place of resurrection among those who will have no fear upon them nor will they be grieving, through Your Mercy, O Most Merciful of those who show mercy.”
And I (Tulaib Zafir, the translator) say: “And I add[1] to this (the above-mentioned supplications):
“O Allah, show us the Truth as true and grant us the ability to follow it. And show us falsehood as falsehood and grant us the ability to avoid it. O Allah, apportion for us reverential fear of You that shall come between us and disobedience of You; and obedience to You which shall cause us to obtain Your Paradise; and certainty which shall make the afflictions of the world easy for us; and allow us enjoyment O Allah of our hearing, and our seeing, and our strength as long as You keep us alive; and make it the inheritor of us. And let our vengeance be upon those who have wronged us; and aid us against those who show enmity towards us; and do not make our affliction in our religion; and do not make this world our greatest concern, nor the limit of our knowledge; and do not make the Hell-Fire our abode; and do not, due to our sins, give power over us to those who will not fear You in regards to [our rights] nor have mercy on us, through Your Mercy, O Most Merciful of those who show mercy.”
Imam ‘Aasim ibn Abi an-Nujood narrates from Zirr ibn Hubaysh, who said, “I recited the entire Qur’an in the central Masjid of Kufa to the leader of the believers, Imam ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him). When I reached the Hawaameem (i.e. Surah Ghafir to Surah Ahqaf), he said, ‘O Zirr! You have reached the beautiful brides of the Qur’an.’ When I reached approximately twenty or so verses into Surah Ha Meem. Ayn Seen Qaaf. (i.e. Shura) at the verse, ‘And those who believed and did righteous deeds are in the gardens of Paradise. For them is whatever they wish with their Lord; that is the great bounty,’ [‘Ali] wept loudly. Then he raised his head to the sky and said, ‘O Zirr! Say Ameen to my supplication.’ Then he supplicated,
‘O Allah, I ask you for the humility of the humble; and the sincerity of the (true) believers; and the company of the righteous; and to be worthy of the true essence of faith; and for the benefit of every good deed; and for security from every sin; and the incumbency of Your mercy; and the determinations of Your forgiveness; and success with Paradise; and salvation from the Hell-Fire.’
Then ‘Ali said, ‘O Zirr! When you complete a recitation of the Qur’an, supplicate with these prayers, for indeed my beloved, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, commanded me to supplicate with them upon the completion of the Qur’an.’
This concludes what I wished to mention regarding supplications; and it is enough. And I ask Allah the Almighty that He benefits through this reminder and makes it solely for His sake.
…
And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. May Allah send His blessings upon our chief Muhammad ﷺ and his family and companions. And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
[1] This Du’aa is not found in the original text but is rather my own addition in an attempt to follow the tradition of Imams Ibn al-Jazari and as-Sakhawi. The supplications I have added reflect my own defects and what I personally seek from Allah.
