CALAMITIES, DISASTERS, DIFFICULTIES, TRIALS, ETC. Allah Ta'ala declares: " And whatever strikes you of calamities – it is due to what YOUR own hands have earned (i.e. misdeeds); although He overlooks much." (42:30)" And verily, We will make them taste of the near lighter torment prior to the greater torment (32:21)In the Tafseer of Ibn Katheer it is related that Hadhrat Ibn Abbas (radhiyallahu anhu) said regarding the aforementioned verse: " The near torment means diseases and problems in this world, and the things that happen to its people as a test from Allah to His servants so that they will repent to Him."These verses are general and apply to everyone, except the sinless (and virtually sinless) such as the Prophets (alayhis salaam). The trials and tribulations of Prophets, rather than cleansing their non-existent sins, serve instead to raise their ranks and also as an inspiration for their Ummah and future nations. As for the rest of us who are sinful (i.e. virtually everyone), we should reflect on the verses above, introspect, do Tawbah, and resolve sincerely to abstain from the sins which have caused trials and calamities to descend upon us. Allah’s Punishment is commensurate with the crime. The worse the crime, the greater the calamity. Remember! Far far worse than sins are justification (Halaalization) of those sins, and even worse than justification of those sins is propagating your justification by which the doors are opened for others to also soothe their consciences while sinning. The trick of hiding behind scholars who legalize (Halaalize) doubtful matters does not work with this Divine Rule of calamities. Humble yourself, repent and turn to Allah wholeheartedly, make proper amends (e.g. Rujoo'), adopt Taqwa (fear of Allah which leads one to abstain from all Haraam and doubtful matters), and you will experience first-hand the Help of Allah and Deliverance from Calamities as guaranteed by Allah Ta’ala: “ Whosoever adopts Taqwa of Allah, He will make a way out for him (from difficulties), and He (Allah) will provide for him from places he (the afflicted person) could never have imagined.” (65:3)

Ibn Abi Haatim narrates in his Tafseer of the verse:
“And whatever strikes you of calamities – it is due to what YOUR own hands have earned (i.e. misdeeds); although He overlooks much.” (42:30)
"When it was revealed, Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:
"By the one in whose Hands is the soul of Muhammad, there is no scratch from a twig, nor palpitation of a vein, nor a slip of the feet, except (that it occurs) due to a sin. And what Allah overlooks is more."
It needs to be noted that what Allah overlooks pertains to the private sins of a servant which do not affect others. If Allah wills, He may punish. If He wishes, He may pardon.
However, in relation to a sin which infringes on the rights of others, such as a reckless utterance which amounts to slander, or one that is responsible for the misguidance of others, the Sunnah of Allah is that the servant is required to make adequate amends before the calamity that descended as a result is averted. Even the silent bystanders of such a crime can be regarded as complicit and be justly liable for affliction of worldly calamities.
In the Tafseer of at-Tabari, it is related that Ibn Abbas (radhiyallahu anhu) said regarding this "lesser punishment":
"The calamities of this Dunya, its diseases (both mental and physical), and its misfortunes (of all forms) with which Allah afflicts his servants UNTIL they repent."
It behoves a servant suffering from disease, tragedies, pain, and the like, to sincerely search within himself, introspect deeply, and seek to make amends immediately, especially for those sins for which he has thus far obstinately refused to acknowledge as sins, before his pain and suffering is multiplied manifold with the arrival of the Greater Torment:
"And verily, We will make them taste of the near lighter punishment prior to the Greater Torment." (32:21)

FEAR ONLY YOUR SINS Ali (radhiyallahu anhu) said: “Words (of advice), if you were to ride the camel for them, you would tire it out before you reach the like of them: * The servant should have hope in none except his Lord. * He should fear nothing except his sins. * The one who does not know should not be shy to learn. * The Aalim should not be shy in saying, “Allah knows best”, when he is asked about what he does not know. * And know that the position of Sabr (patience and perseverance) in respect to Imaan (faith) is like the position of the head in respect to the body. Thus, when the head goes the body goes, and (in the same way) when Sabr goes, Imaan goes.” (Musannaf of Abu Shaybah)

In an authentic Hadith narrated by At-Tabarani, Rasulullah ﷺ states: " No vein palpitates, nor an eye (twitches), except due to a sin, and whatever Allah averts from him is more." (Al-Mu'jam as-Sagheer)
عن البراء بن عازب رضي الله عنه، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: ( ما اختلج عرق ولا عين إلا بذنب وما يدفع الله عنه أكثر

CALAMITIES AND SINS Shaykh Ashraf Ali Thanwi (rahmatullahi alayh) said: "Calamities are the consequences of our sins. However, our sins are furthest from the mind when a misfortune befalls. Instead of Istighfaar (seeking forgiveness), people complain, become frustrated and even utter blasphemous statements. This is because they believe themselves to be sinless. Allah Ta’ala says: “ Whatever misfortune befalls you, is the consequence of what your hands have earned, although He pardons much of your sins (i.e. the calamities afflicting you represent only a fraction of your sins).” Once Hadhrat Umar (Radhiyallahu anhu) ordered a thief’s hand to be cut off. The thief pleaded saying that this was his first offence. Hadhrat Umar (Radhiyallahu anhu) rejected his plea saying that Allah Ta’ala never humiliates a person for the first offence. Investigation established that it was his fourth offence. Allah Ta’ala overlooks and forgives numerous of our sins. But when the point of no return is reached, then His chastisement overtakes us." (Malfoozaat)

HARDSHIPS AND DIFFICULTIES - THE MAIN CAUSE Hazrat Shaikh Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) once mentioned: " My beloved friends! Going on discussing one’s difficulties and problems will not bring about any solution nor will it help you. In the face of hardships and difficulties, nothing benefits a person except istighfaar and earnestly turning to Allah Ta‘ala in du‘aa. Mention this advice of mine to your friends and associates and frequently remind them of it as well.
We should understand that all the difficulties and calamities that we experience are actually the result of our evil actions. In reality, the difficulties that we face on account of our sins and wrongs are much less than what we are deserving of.
My beloved friends! Each person should look into his own heart to introspect over his condition and see what sins he is involved in. The truth of the matter is that we are only continuing in our present condition due to the mercy of Allah Ta‘ala and the blessing of Rasulullah (sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), as we are definitely deserving of far greater punishments and difficulties.
When difficulties and calamities overcome us then falling into anxiety and depression will not help us. It is crying to Allah Ta‘ala in repentance that will help us."(Qutbul Aqtaab Hazrat Shaikhul Hadeeth Moulana Muhammad Zakariyya (rahmatullahi ‘alaih) pg. 421-422)

Abu al-Muhallab narrates:
"I set out to (go to) Aisha (radhiyallahu anha) (to ask) regarding the verse: "It is not (according to) your desires, nor the desires of the people of the book (that determines entry to Jannah). Whosoever commits a sin, will be recompensed for it." (Surah al-Nisaa). She said: "It is what afflicts you in the Dunya."
(Recorded by Al-Haakim in his Mustadrak. Imam adh-Dhahabi concurred that it is Saheeh according to the conditions of al-Bukhari and Muslim)

Hadhrat Aisha (radhiyallahu anha) narrates that a man recited this verse: "Whosoever does a sin, will be punished for it." and said, "We will be punished for all of our actions (i.e. misdeeds)? We will be destroyed (in that case)!" When this reached Rasulullah ﷺ, he said, "Yes, the believers will be punished for it (misdeeds) in the Dunya through his affliction in his body in that which pains him."
(Saheeh Hadith recorded in Musnad Ahmad and Musnad Abee Ya'laa)
