Many quote ad-Dhahabi's work on his "virtues of Abu Hanifa" in an attempt to defend Abu Hanifa's credibility, but ad-Dhahabi weakened Abu Hanifa in matters of Hadith and stated that he had a weak memory:
Do Hanafis concede that ad-Dhahabi weakened Abu Hanifa's memory? What is the Hanafi response?

What is the Hanafi response? The above quotation seems to have been taken from the late al-Albani who quoted from Imam al-Dhahabi's Diwan al-Du'afa (manuscript from Zahiriyya library and now published in 2 different editions). The simple answer for those who think that just because Imam Abu Hanifa was listed in such a work is to explain why in the same work there is a notice on Muhammad ibn Ishaq (the expert on Sira and Maghazi, see no. 3589) and other famous narrators found in Sahih al-Bukhari, like Ali ibn al-Ja'd (see no. 2910), who was a Hafiz and compiler of a Musnad collection. The Albani'ites are asked to explain the methodology of al-Dhahabi in his Diwan al-Du'afa before drawing conclusions that all narrators must be by default da'eef just because they were listed in Diwan al-Du'afa. Also, if you read the book by Shaykh Abdur Rashid Nu'mani carefully you would have noticed the following also from al-Dhahabi (as quoted on p. 35 of the pdf file, also see p. 38): Al-Dhahabi praised Al-Mizzi in his “Tadhheeb” in the biography of Abu Hanifa saying: “Our Shaykh Abu Al-Hajjaaj did an excellent job in that he did not narrate anything regarding Abu Hanifa [of the false reports] that might indicate that he was a weak narrator.”This verdict by al-Dhahabi is found in his Tadhhib al-Tahdhib (9/225). Al-Dhahabi listed Imam Abu Hanifa as a Hafiz of Hadith in his Tadhkiratul Huffaz (1/126) and as a Muhaddith in his al-Mu'in fi Tabaqat al-Muhaddithin (no. 554). Also note that he did not weaken Imam Abu Hanifa in his Al-Kashif fi Ma`rifa Man Lahu Riwaya fi al-Kutub al-Sitta (no. 5845), which is an abridgement of his Tadhhib al-Tahdhib. Hence, there does not appear to be any known and direct verdict of weakness upon Imam Abu Hanifa by al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi.
