The only way to ensure success in this Dunya and in the Akhirah is by adhering to the Deen as best we can. The Salaf (early generations) of the Ummah have gone through great pains to ensure the Deen is accurately preserved for us. They have ensured the preservation of the Qur'an, Hadith and the Ahkam (rulings) of Deen. Correct knowledge (ilm) is only that which is in accordance with the teachings of the Salaf. There are four Madhhabs (schools) of Fiqh (practical rulings of Deen) that have their roots in the time of the Salaf. For most of its history, the Ummah has remained upon the teachings of these four Madhhabs. Two Madhhabs of Aqidah (doctrines of Deen), the Ash'ari and Maturidi schools, also have their roots in the Salaf, and were followed by the great majority of the Ummah. Scholars have warned against veering away from these schools of Aqidah and Fiqh of the Salaf.
From the 19th century onward, the Ummah has been ravaged by modernist thought. This is an ideology that says we must move away from the understandings of the early generations of the Ummah and develop our own understandings on what the Qur'an and Sunnah teaches. This ideology is extremely dangerous, and has the potential to cause a person to lose their Iman altogether. Unfortunately, some madrasahs and Islamic schools are adopting modernist teachings of Deen and are encouraging modernist preachers. The common thread in modernist thought is a lack of emphasis on the teachings of the predecessors and a greater emphasis on the independent opinions of recent individuals, along with support for views that have little or no precedent amongst the classical scholars. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) has warned of such a time when true Ulama will pass away and individuals will give answers from their own opinions and will misguide others. Imam Muhammad ibn Sirin, one of the imams of the Salaf, said: "Deeni knowledge is Deen (i.e. Deeni knowledge will inform how Deen is practised), so be careful of who you take Deeni knowledge from."
One such modernist preacher is Akram Nadwi, who lives in Oxford. He is a popular writer and speaker, and has delivered lectures and courses in many places. Akram Nadwi is a modernist ideologue, whose teachings are poisonous and harmful to the public. Unfortunately he is invited to speak in religious venues and some Ulama have even expressed support for him.
1. Akram Nadwi has openly encouraged people to follow any opinion they choose to on matters of Fiqh, referring to matters of Fiqh as having hardly any importance. Such istikhfaf (belittling) of Fiqh could even amount to Kufr.
2. Akram Nadwi has rejected the hadith found in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim on magic performed on the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam), and goes as far as to say that those who accept it should rather have engaged in adultery and all sins apart from shirk! The view that this hadith is authentic, and that magic did affect the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam), is held by all the classical Ulama of Ahl al-Sunnah besides an extremely fringe group of scholars.
3. Akram Nadwi follows the view that it is more virtuous for women to pray their obligatory salahs in the masjid. This is an extremely fringe view held only by Ibn Hazm from the classical scholars. The consensus of the four Madhhabs is that it is better for a woman to pray her obligatory salah at home. But even Ibn Hazm believed that if women are applying perfume or wearing attractive clothing, it is obligatory to prevent them access to the masjid.
4. Akram Nadwi is very dismissive of the schools of Aqidah and Fiqh, even going so far as to refer to the Fuqaha of the past as misogynists!
5. Akram Nadwi refers to the Niqaab as a cultural attire that has nothing to do with Deen.
6. Akram Nadwi does not shy away from using highly inappropriate and offensive language.
7. Akram Nadwi once lied about Mawlana Zakariyya Kandhlewi, claiming he was mentally unwell. When his slander was exposed, he did not retract.
8. Akram Nadwi has also distorted textual evidence. He said in a talk: "A hadith of Bukhari, it says very clearly once we were travelling with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wasallam and men and women both were doing wudu at the same time from the same container." He appears to argue from this that it is fine for women to reveal their arms and the parts of wudu in front of men for this purpose! The hadith in reference says nothing about "travelling". It only states that men and women would make wudu together in the time of the Prophet (sallallahu 'alayhi wasallam) i.e. from the same container. According to commentators, this was either before the obligation of Hijab in the 5th year of Hijrah or is referring to husbands and wives performing wudu together.
In short, Akram Nadwi is virulently opposed to the way Deen was traditionally practised, and is preaching his modernist version of Deen.
For the safety of one's Deen and Iman, it is important to stay clear of Akram Nadwi and those like him, and to follow the teachings of trustworthy traditional Ulama who emphasise on following the teachings of the Salaf, adhering to the Madhhabs of Fiqh and adopting the correct Aqidah.
May Allah protect us from the influence of such evil scholars (Ulama al-Su') and protect us from the poisonous ideology of modernism, Amin.
