Is Secular Knowledge Included in the ‘Ilm Praised in Qur’an and Hadith?

The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever treads a path on which he is seeking knowledge (‘ilm), Allah will make the path to Paradise easy for him.” (Sahih Muslim, 2797)
The Qur’an and Hadith are replete with praise for knowledge and those who possess knowledge. What is meant by “knowledge” in these scriptural passages? Is it only religious knowledge or does it include worldly/secular knowledge as well?
This presentation offers clarity on this commonly-asked question by looking at the context of some of these scriptural passages, and by drawing on the insight of classical authorities like al-Halimi, al-Bayhaqi, al-Ghazali and al-Qurtubi.
