In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. The Hanafi scholars have clearly stated that the beard is what grows on the jawbone (i.e. the bone that holds the lower teeth, known as the ‘mandible’). ‘Allāmah Hasan al-Shurunbulālī (994 – 1069 H), the great Egyptian Hanafī jurist, writes: واللحي منبت اللحية فوق عظم الأسنان “The jawbone (lahy) is the area of growth of the beard (lihyah), on top of the bone [holding] the [lower] teeth.”[1] And Allah Ta‘ālā Knows Best
