Today (11/06/2015) in Blackburn Dar al-'Ulum (Jami'at al-Ilm wa al-Huda), Hazrat Shaykh al-Hadith Mufti Sa'id Ahmad Palanpuri (May Allah Preserve him) was asked a few questions related to 'Aqida by Maulana Suhail Akubat.
Question:
According to my limited understanding, the Hanafis will either follow the Maturidi school of thought or the Ash'ari school of thought. Would it be correct for someone to follow any other schools of thought in 'Aqida related matters?
Answer:
In Fiqh there are four schools of thought that are on Haqq. Other than these schools of thought, no reputable schools of thought remain. Similarly in 'Aqa'id there are three; the Maturidiyya, the Asha'ira and the Salafiyya. One may follow any of these three schools of thought.
Question:
Hazrat Mufti Sahib, by the Salafiyya do you mean the Salafi sect of today?
Answer:
Definitely not! The salafi sect of today are nothing but sulfis! What I mean by Salafiyya are those that follow the authentic 'Aqida of Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (May Allah be pleased with him) and the earlier scholars.
Question:
Would those who follow a school of thought in 'Aqida besides these three, be considered from amongst the people of Haqq?
Answer:
'Allah ka Banda' I told you! It is only the Maturidiyya, the Asha'ira and the Salafiyya (those who follow the authentic 'Aqida of Imam Ahmad) that are the People of Truth.
Question:
What is the correct stance with regards to the Sifat Mutashabiha?
Answer:
There are two stances which are acceptable. One is Tanzih ma'a al-Tafwidh and the other is Tanzih ma'a al-Ta'wil. The former means to believe that Allah Almighty is over and above being compared to any of His creation and we will not attempt to interpret such verses, rather the meaning of such verses will be left to Allah. The meaning of Istiwa will be found in the dictionary but we will not attempt to define or interpret this. The latter also means to believe that Allah is over and above being compared to His creation but an appropriate interpretation of the verse can be applied which will be devoid of any thought of comparing Allah to his creation. Both opinions however are correct. My question is, did the companions ever ask the Messenger (Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) regarding Istiwa? The answer is no, so why should we then delve into what the Sifat Mutashabiha mean!? To question with regards to Istiwa is in itself a Bid'a.
Question:
Is Ibn Abi al-'Izz a reputable commentator of al-'Aqida al-Tahawiyya?
Answer:
No! Who is this fellow? He is an unknown author! Check the books of Tabaqat for his name, he is unknown. The fact that al-Albani has written footnotes on his commentary shows that Ibn Abi al-'Izz is one from the same sect as al-Albani!
