The Authority of Hadith - Mufti Zameelur Rahman

An introductory course on the Sunnah as a source of revelation; the preservation and authority of Hadith (Prophetic Traditions); and a critical evaluation of the arguments of Hadith-Rejectors.


This course:

1. examines the evidence that the “Sunnah” (the guidance of the Prophet ﷺ) serves as a source of authoritative extra-Qur’anic revelation;

2. offers a simple guide to “Hadith” (reports from or about the Prophet ﷺ) and evidence of its authoritativeness;

3. explores how Hadith was passed down and preserved;

4. looks at the erudition of the early Hadith-experts and the tools they developed to sift the inauthentic hadiths from the authentic hadiths;

5. presents a critique of some of the core arguments of Hadith-rejectors.

This course is also designed to be beginner-friendly, with examples and illustrations.

2. Hadith transmission and preservation

3. The writing-down and codification of Hadith

4. Methods of analysing Hadith for reliability

5. Degrees of Hadith-rejection

6. Analysing the arguments of Hadith-rejectors

Teacher Bio: Mufti Zameelur Rahman

Mufti Zameel completed his memorisation of the Qur'an as a teenager. He later went on to complete the 'Alimiyyah programme in the Islamic sciences at Darul Ulum Birmingham, UK. He then furthered his studies and completed an Ifta/Takhassus fi' l-Fiqh (specialisation in fiqh and fatwa) course at Dar al-Ifta al-Mahmudiyyah in Durban, South Africa under renowned specialists Mufti Ebrahim Desai and Mufti Husain Kadodia.
