Clarification regarding a point made in Shaykh Yunus Jonpuri's bio/thabat (al-Faraa'id fi 'Awaali al-Asaanid wa Ghawaali al-Fawaa'id) on Pg.192-193 regarding him wiping over jawrabs (generally understood as 'cotton socks') and attributing it to Maulana Husayn Ahmad Madani.
I asked Shaykh Yunus on Friday 5th February 2016 regarding this, and he said there is a mistake in transmission (naql mein ghalti he). He clarified that he thought Maulana Madani would wipe over (regular) cotton socks. He asked Maulana Madani's grandson (nawaasa - I'm assuming Mufti Salman Mansurpuri?) regarding it, to which he replied: "My grandmother (nani) showed me the socks he would wipe on and they were socks with leather soles", i.e. muna'al.
I then asked Shaykh Yunus his opinion regarding wiping on cotton socks. He did not approve of it.

"In fiqh parlance, thin cotton socks with a leather covering are known as raqiq muna'al. Hanafi jurists have divided opinions as to whether it is lawful to do mash (wiping) over these. Mufti Muhammad Shafi' held the view that wiping over them for wudu' is not lawful. He had adduced arguments for this viewpoint, which feature in Fatawa Dar al-'Ulum Deoband. However, Mawlana Madani regarded this practice as lawful. The two had discussions on this contentious issue several times; yet both adhered to their respective viewpoints...After this incident, Mawlana Madani visited Mufti Muhammad Shafi''s brother-in-law, Mawlana Hasan. Mufti Muhammad Shafi' was also present on this occasion. Mawlana Madani was wearing those socks, and while doing wudu' for the maghrib prayer, he did mash over them and said, 'O Mufti, this practice is not acceptable to you. Your prayer behind me would not be valid, so you had better lead the prayer.' Mufti Muhammad Shafi' did not decline, and proceeded to lead the prayer." (The Great Scholars of the Deoband Islamic Seminary [Translation of Akabir-e-Deoband Kiya They by Mufti Taqi Usmani], Turath Publishing, p. 102-3)
