A certain group needs to be aware of what their kibār have said regarding wiping the face after duʿā' and not pay attention to isolated opinions or the tantrums of their "daʿīs" who constantly repeat that it is 'bidʿah' to do so. This issue; مسح الوجه بعد الدعاء [wiping of the face after the duʿā'] has genuine ikhtilāf amongst the Scholars. The disagreement comes down to which principle the Scholars agree to be correct according to the science of ḥadīth, namely the first view; accepting weak ḥadīth for faḍā'il (virtues) or a combination of weak aḥādīth being graded to the level of al-ḥasan li-ghayrih, and the second view; rejecting all weak aḥādīth mutlaqan (absolutely) even if it is relating to the chapter of faḍā'il.
However, not getting into the technicalities of the above views, it is important to note the views of the kibār ʿulamā' of this group; Shaykh Ibn Bāz and Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn on this issue, even though the mentioned Scholars hold the view that weak ḥadīth cannot be acted upon absolutely they still did not condemn the practice as an innovation.
Shaykh Ibn Bāz has mentioned in his fatāwā (http://www.binbaz.org.sa/node/11228):
مسح الوجه بعد الدعاء ليس بدعة، لكن تركه أفضل للأحاديث الضعيفة وقد ذهب جماعة إلى تحسينها؛ لأنها من باب الحسن لغيره، كما ذلك الحافظ بن حجر -رحمه الله- في آخر بلوغ المرام، وذكر ذلك آخرون، فمن رآها من باب الحسن استحب المسح، ومن رآها من قبيل الضعيف لم يستحب المسح
"Wiping the face after duʿā' is not a bidʿah, although leaving it is better due to the weakness of the aḥādīth. A group of Scholars have adopted [the view of] its authentication, because it is from the chapter of al-ḥasan li-ghayrih (ḥasan due external evidence) as mentioned by the Ḥāfiẓ Ibn Ḥajar al-ʿAsqalānī in the last portion of his Bulūgh 'l-Marām, and latter Scholars have mentioned that [also]. So whoever sees it [these weak aḥādīth pertaining to wiping the face] on the level of ḥasan (good) permit the desirability of wiping. Those that see it from the category of the weak do not permit the desirability of wiping."
Shaykh Ibn ʿUthaymīn has mentioned in his book (http://islamport.com/d/2/hnb/1/6/242.html):
فالأفضل أن لا يمسح، ولكن لا ننكر على من مسح اعتمادا على تحسين الأحاديث الواردة في ذلك؛ لأن هذا مما يختلف فيه الناس.
"Hence it is better not to wipe the face, but we do not repudiate the one who wipes relying upon the authentication of the many aḥādīth affirming that, because this is from amongst those issues over which people have disagreed."
Wallāhu Aʿlam.
